Is there a software cd that I can buy to create a family tree? I have the info but was wondering if there was a simple program that could create a family tree chart??
I’m currently using Family Tree Maker 16. Family Tree Maker offers upgrades once a year and this year the upgrade was free. The current version of Family Tree Maker is designed so that you can search Ancestry.com from within Family Tree Maker. No other genealogy software can do that. Also, you can add photographs, images of scanned documents, and sound files to your database. I’m sticking with Family Tree Maker since the other genealogists in my family all use Family Tree Maker, too.
One of the newest genealogy software applications is Roots Magic. With Roots Magic you should be able to do just about anything that you can do with Family Tree Maker except the search of Ancestry.com from within the database. One advantage that Roots Magic has over Family Tree Maker is you can make "shareable CDs" meaning you can save a copy of your data file to a CD with a read-only version of the Roots Magic software so that anyone can read your data file without having to buy a copy of Roots Magic themselves.
Personal Ancestral File (PAF) is free. However, the software is outdated when compared to other software and doesn’t come with as many options or features. If you’re planning to submit your genealogy to the LDS church in the form of TempleReady, then this is your best choice. If you’re not planning to submit TempleReady, pick something else.
Legacy Family Tree is a widely used software application that comes in a free version and a more elaborate version that is available for a fee. With Legacy, you can try out the free version and buy the full version if you think you’ll need the extra features.
I’ve attached a link to Kimberly Powell’s reviews of genealogy software. She goes into a lot more detail about these and other genealogy programs.

There are dozens of programs for genealogy. They all have many, many reports – pedigree charts, "ancestors of" reports, "descendants of" reports and more. You enter the data, they manipulate it for you. They are to family trees what "Word" is to novels or "Excel" is to tax returns.
Family Tree Maker is the most popular. It comes bundled with CD’s which may have data you can use. How much it costs depends on how many CD’s you buy.
PAF is free – you get it from the Mormons.
Roots Magic has an impressive list of praise from software critics. It is $29.
There are many more. Those three are the most popular. You can find demo versions of FTM and RM on the web.
Once you get over 500 – 600 individuals, a program really helps a lot.
I have tried all 3. I like RM the best. Just for instance, you can run a report called "Problems". It finds typos, like someone b. 1785, d. 1846, where you entered "1746" for his death date. Born after death, it says. It catches 14 – 20 other sorts of errors we humans are prone to.

The answers preceding mine are VERY recommendable.
I was feeling a bit cheap at the time I was exploring family tree software and I found a free version at:

It’s VERY vanilla – very plain. The price was right for me at the time!
